New law will ax school tax penalty
Residents whose invoices failed to arrive will not have to pay the price for a USPS error.
Good news for residents who were slapped with penalties because the Postal Service didn’t deliver some of their school tax invoices: On September 20, 2024, Governor Hochul signed a bill to provide relief from the fines.
By way of background, the Scarsdale Town Board passed a home rule request in response to concerns from residents who had not received their school tax bills via USPS, and then incurred school tax penalties because of it. The next step is for the Scarsdale Town Board to approve a process to refund the 2023-2024 real property school taxes to qualified residents. Approving this application will be the first item on the Town Board’s Agenda at its next meeting, on October 8, 2024. Assuming the form is greenlighted, it will be available for Scarsdale residents on the Village website on October 9. Once all necessary information is received, it is anticipated that refunds will be processed within 4-6 weeks.
The Village/Town of Scarsdale has extended thanks Governor Hochul for signing the bill, and to Assemblywoman Paulin, and State Senator Mayer for making it possible.
